Slang
The way locals speak to each other or even the accent could be confusing to you. Soon you pick up accent, you will understand the words, but because so many people from different countries live in Australia, accents could cause you to misunderstand the words used. Do not blame yourself if you do not understand- often it is the pronunciation- not your language knowledge. Aussies use slang to replace the correct words. Dictionaries are available full of OZ slang. But if it is used to you, make sure you understand the words in the situation the world are being used. You could misunderstand the slang and find yourself in a bad position.
G ‘’Day’’ is usually to most used slang. It means hullo or Hi or Asian greeting- have you eaten yet? There are houndreds, no, thousands of words Aussies use, often colourful or coarse. Among friends in social times, words could be used but not in formal situations- as an example a job interview or in classes at schools.
It is hard to start to list the slang words- from arse (American say ass) to yob ( an ignorant person) and the list goes on. Australians are now using many American slang words- S.O.B and guys are now common in Australia. Some slang is local, confined to one state or even area. What might be one words meaning in NSW. Might be a different meaning in Darwin or North Queensland. Make sure you know the meaning of the slang used in the situation you are dealing with, otherwise it could be embarassing to you.
