Hospitality Work
Most cities have a fair amount of temporary hospitality work in bars and restaurants or through agencies specialising in catering and special events staff.
If you’re looking for hospitality work in the city, it is recommended to you have some experience and usually a Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certificate which is approved by Liquor Administration Board.
The RSA certificate is a day-one course, available at select training centres in the city and through post.
Ensure your RSA certificate is Liquor Administration Board (LAB) approved as some courses are not and will not be recognized.
If you prefer work during the day, a café could be the way to go. Some cafes only open for shopping malls or around businesses.
Although not compulsory, a Barista skills course could give you an edge in the café job-market and make you an instant star with the regulars.
Restaurants and bars are great option if you prefer to have the day off. By opting for night-shifts, you can spend the daylight hours as you please.
Nursing Work
If you’re qualified nurse, there are dozens of nursing agencies around the country wanting to find you work. There are usually jobs for nurses in every major city in Australia.
City-based nursing agencies can also arrange work in Aboriginal Communities or remote locations around the country.
Nurses with qualifications from overseas must register with the Nurses Registration Board in your local state before you will be allowed to work as a registered nurse. Nursing agencies generally recommended nurses from United Kingdom remain registered with the RCN when they leave home although it does not cover your PII insurance while working in Australia.
Most nursing agencies accept navy or black pants or skirt and white collared shirt.
Construction Work, Labouring or Traffic Controller
Round the clock work is always available in these fields, which mean flexible hours perfect for students who have to match work and study. Penalty rates make round the clock work even more attractive.
Labouring work is easy to find and is a great way to make a few weeks worth of cash. Be prepared to get up early and work hard.
While you are not expected to have any previous experience, some states require you to hold an Occupational Health and Safety Certificate before you can even enter a building site. Otherwise known as s ‘’Greencard’’, you can usually obtain the certificate in a day.
Stop\Slow Traffic Controller otherwise known as Lollipop Man or Woman, is popular with working travelers. Work continues day and night, so a diverse range of hours are available. You will need to obtain a certificate before you can apply for Lollipop work. Each state has different requirements, so check with an employment agency specialising in construction work. They can help you find work once you’re qualified.
Nanny or Au Pair
If you love working with babies and young children, daytime nanny work is available all over Australia. A first Aid Certificate and lots of experience will increase your chances of finding work.
While qualifications are preferred theyare not essential. It’s more important that you have lots of patience, energy and are responsible.
‘’Au Pairs’’ and ‘’ Mothers Helpers’’ look after older school-age children, while a ‘’Nanny’’ looks after babies and young children.
Childcare is an option if you have NNEB (National Nursery Examination Board) qualifications.
Employment Agencies
There are dozens of employment agencies around Australia specializing in office and hospitality work in the cities. It’s best to call the agency first and arrange a time to come in, register and have your skills assessed. If you are interested in office work you will probably have to sit a few computers competency testes. These usually include a typing test for speed and accuracy, and depending what job are you going for, Word, Exel and Powerpoint testes.
